Why it is important to brush your teeth at night?
We're not swallowing while we are sleeping. And when we are not swallowing, the bacteria in our mouth increase. When bacteria keep accumulating in the mouth, there can be complications. Nighttime brushing avoids giving the bacteria anything to break down and feed on.
Brushing teeth before bed is as important as it is in the morning. The bacteria move all across the mouth and thus cannot be removed with just once-a-day brushing. If left in place, the bacteria start to attack your teeth and can be one of the reasons for deposition of plaque.
When you brush twice a day, the bacteria are disrupted and don't stay in place. When bacteria sit in one place, they can become tartar (hard, yellow, rough material you sometimes feel in between your teeth or on the edges closer to the gum). Tartar can cause inflammation and bleeding in the gums. When you let bacteria sit at one place for too long, you risk losing teeth. There is no definite time frame to tell when plaque becomes risky. The process of cavity formation can start when you brush only once.
According to the American Dental Association (ADA), brushing twice a day is a necessity. When you do a so-so job brushing, missing the routine every now and then, it can be just as bad. It is advised that you have a fluoride toothpaste and soft-bristled brush at home for your brushing. Moreover, a brushing should be thorough and must cover all surfaces of the teeth, and not only those parts that we see when we smile.
Apart from twice-a-day brushing, floss once a day and see a dentist regularly to take care of the rest. Gums, mints and mouthwashes are no substitutes for brushing. They don’t do anything else than giving your mouth a fresher feel.
