According to our nutritionist, Steroids are hormones which have potent anti-inflammatory and immune modulating properties. These are usually prescribed to treat inflammation.  Salty foods increase fluid retention and has to be avoided when taking steroids. Steroids can influence blood sugar levels by making the liver resistant to insulin.  Making lifestyle corrections like a healthy balanced diet, avoiding simple sugars and refined carbohydrates, along with regular exercise will bring about good blood sugar control. This control has to be followed for a period of 5-10 days post administering of steroids. And also make sure that the diet is rich in calcium, vitamin K, potassium and proteins to avoid deficiencies caused by steroids. 

Which Food To Avoid With Medical Supplements?

There are certain food items which should be avoided with certain type of medical supplements. Here are the food items-

Grapefruit 

Many people may enjoy this fruit or have it in the form of juice often. But if you are taking any medicine for your heart, manage anxiety or control seizures, then you should give this fruit a no for some time long. Grapefruits are a substance that can cause some drugs to react quickly which may be threatening and negative to your life. Hence if you are at medication for any of these diseases then avoid taking grapefruit for some time.

Licorice

Even though there could be a debate regarding the likeliness of this fruit, people who like it should be aware of some things. If you are suffering from certain medical conditions or blood pressure drugs then licorice could be harmful to you. It has glycyrrhizin that can lower the amount of potassium in your blood. This can result in irregular heartbeat or high blood pressure.

Alcohol 

Many medicines can be dangerous when taken with drug. They also come with a warning to avoid drug use during the medication. In most of the cases it’s about not taking alcohol at all under any circumstances. It can cause worse reactions when mixed with other drugs and cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, memory issues and internal bleeding too. It can result to severe liver damage if the reaction is strong and hence cause blood clotting.

Food High in Vitamin K

Vitamin K is useful in blood clots. If you are taking anticoagulation or blood thinners then it is recommended not to eat vegetables which are rich in vitamin K. These generally include kale, cabbage and spinach, these vegetables can make blood thinners less effective. Usually it is told to avoid or reduce the amount of such food items, not to totally take it out from your diet. Sudden decrease or increase in amount of vitamin K can also have some negative effects.

Dairy Products 

Dairy products are mostly rich in calcium and hence it can have a reaction to anti-biotic. Medical steroids like antibiotics should be taken without much dairy products in your diet. However it is quite time bound, dairy products can be had in moderation after a particular time gap from before and after the medication intake. Some beverages also have dairy products in them, so that also needs to be taken care off while you take any antibiotic drug.

Preventions Tips Supplement's Reaction With Food-

These food drug interactions can be avoided if the supplements are taken 1 hour or 2 hours before or after the meal. Some medicines are asked to be taken on an empty stomach. Certain things which you can watch out for while buying medicines. 

  • Always read the labels carefully. 
  • Ask your doctor what needs to be avoided if they prescribe a particular medicine. 
  • Do not take medications with food (unless your physician prescribes).  
  • Do not take vitamin pills with other drugs as vitamins and minerals interact with some drugs. 
  • Do not take medications with hot drinks as the heat can destroy the effectiveness of the drug. 
  • Never take medications with alcoholic drinks.
