When to seek Medical Attention for High Blood Pressure?

Medical Attention for High Blood Pressure - Doctor may recommend more frequent examinations if your blood pressure is higher than normal.

If you are above 20 years get your blood pressure checked at least every two years. Your doctor may recommend more frequent examinations if your blood pressure is higher than normal or there are risk factors for cardiovascular disease like diabetes, or high levels of blood cholesterol.

Children older than three years should also be checked for high blood pressure as a part of their yearly checkups.

High blood pressure is a silent killer

High blood pressure or hypertension is called a silent killer as it mostly has no noticeable symptoms. Untreated and uncontrolled hypertension can lead to heart failure, heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. This makes it important that you go for regular checkups---to ensure that your blood pressure is in the normal range. Regular follow ups are more important if you have hypertension, family history of hypertension, diabetes, or if you are obese.

However, at times you may need to call your doctor. Call your doctor if:

  • Your blood pressure remains high even after taking your prescribed medications
  • You have very high blood pressure
  • You have symptoms like severe headache, anxiety, shortness or difficulty of breath, chest pain, excessive sweating, problem with your vision, confusion or nosebleed.

These symptoms can be caused by uncontrolled high blood pressure or due to the medications.

Don't hesitate to call your doctor if you need help.
