What is your Ideal Weight

Most of us would like to have a body like a model. In addition to a perfect figure you should have a good BMI or body mass index. A person’s BMI is calculated based on his or her weight and height. It is also known as the Quetelet index.

Your BMI does not measure the percentage of fat in your body but estimates a healthy body weight based on your height. BMI is most often and widely used tool to diagnose weight problems like underweight, overweight and obesity. [Read: How to Calculate BMI]

The formula used to calculate BMI of a person in metric system can be defined as body weight divided by the square of the height.

BMI (kg/m² ) = (weight in kilograms)/height in meters². It is interpreted as follows;

  • Below 18.5    Underweight
  • 18.5 -24.9    Normal
  • 25 - 29.9 Overweight
  • 30 & Above    Obese

You should aim for a BMI between 18.5 to 24.9. According to some experts the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and blood pressure begins to increase when the BMI goes above 22. So people with BMI less than 25 should avoid gaining weight and if possible work to lower the BMI to an optimal 22.

What about my 'Set Point'?

According to theory for set point, most people have an internal "set point" that decides the weight your body wants to be. So your body’s metabolism regulates itself to maintain a weight at which it is comfortable. This make losing weight difficult—and most people tend to gain back the unwanted weight once they stop dieting. The internal set point is probably genetically determined and is controlled by hormones and fat cell enzymes.

Although some studies have noted that most people tend to regain their lost weight after dieting-- you can maintain your healthy weight by eating healthy foods and being physically active.

Figuring Out Your Ideal Body Weight

According to BMI calculation to be at a healthy weight your BMI should be between 18.5 to 24.9. But some experts say that ideal body weight should be one that makes you feel strong, healthy, active and full of energy. If needed talk to your doctor to determine a good weight for you.

Most importantly life is not about scales but being healthy and happy.
