Treatment Options for Anemia: Treatment of Anemia depends on the cause of condition, which is different for iron deficiency anemia, vitamin B-12 anemia, thalassemia and sickle cell anemia.

What are the Treatment Options for Anemia

There are several types of anemia such as iron deficiency anemia, vitamin B-12 anemia (pernicious anemia), thalassemia and sickle cell anemia. Treatment depends on the cause of anemia.


Iron deficiency Anemia: This is the commonest type of anemia and it is mostly treated with a few changes in diet and iron supplements. But if there is some other cause of iron deficiency like loss of blood from heavy menstruation the underlying causes has to be treated. Your doctor will recommend treatment based on the cause and severity of anemia.

  • Vitamin deficiency anemias: Folic acid deficiency anemia and vitamin B12 deficiency are the most common vitamin deficiency anemias. Your doctor will recommend vitamin supplements and other measures if needed.
  • Anemia of chronic disease: Many people with a chronic disease such aslike kidney disease, liver disease develop anemia. Treatment for this anemia focuses on correcting the underlying disease. Your doctor may recommend blood transfusion or injections of synthetic erythropoietin depending on the severity of anemia and your health.
  • Aplastic anemia: Treatment for this anemia include blood transfusions, certain medications and if needed bone marrow transplant.
  • Sickle cell anemia: Treatment of sickle cell anemia includes administration of oxygen, drugs to relieve pain, oral or intravenous fluids to reduce pain, blood transfusions, folic acid supplements, antibiotics and a cancer drug called hydroxyurea. Bone marrow transplant may be done in some people with sickle cell anemia.

These are some of the treatments for some of the common types of anemia. Treatment for anemia is based on the type of anemia and several other factors like your response to treatment, medical history, and overall health. Your doctor will recommend treatment based on your type and severity of anemia.
