What is the treatment of Hematuria?

The treatment of hematuria depends on its cause. In general, people with exercise-related hematuria do not need any treatment other than to modify their exercise programs.

Hematuria is the presence of blood in the urine. Blood in urine is usually a sign of a serious medical condition; however, it shouldn't be ignored. It is advised that all the cases of hematuria should be evaluated by a doctor.

Treatment for Hematuria

The cause of hematuria decides its treatment. Those with exercise-related hematuria do not need any treatment other than modification of exercise programs. Drug-related hematuria improves only if patients stop taking the medication that caused it. Infection-related hematuria can be treated with antibiotics.

  • If kidney stones have caused hematuria, doctors recommend drinking lots of fluids to flush small stones. If kidney stones are large in size, these require a surgery or lithotripsy that breaks up the stone.
  • Treatment of hematuria if tumour in bladder or kidney is the cause is done in accordance with the type of cancer and how much the cancer has spread, a patient's age, general health and personal preferences. Treatment options in this case include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and immunotherapy.
  • A course of antibiotics is recommended when glomerulonephritis is responsible for hematuria. Diuretics that help to increase the amount of urine excreted from the body, medications to control high blood pressure and dietary changes to reduce the work of the kidneys. If it is caused by an autoimmune disorder, such as lupus, medications to suppress the immune system, including corticosteroids or cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan, Neosar), may be prescribed.
  • Patients with hemophilia can be treated with infusions of clotting factors or with fresh frozen plasma, a type of transfusion that provides missing factors.

Hematuria related to strenuous exercise can be prevented by switching to a less-intense exercise program. Other forms of hematuria can be prevented by making lifestyle modifications that foster a healthy urinary tract.

  • Stay well hydrated, drinking at least eight glasses of fluid daily.
  • Quit smoking to lessen the chance of urinary tract cancers.

Hematuria related to exercise, medication, kidney stones, urinary tract infection or prostatitis have an excellent outlook for complete recovery. Most children and adults with hematuria recover completely when the illness is mild or if it develops after a strep infection. If illness is severe, disease may lead to chronic kidney failure.

The outlook depends on the stage and type of tumour for people with kidney or bladder cancer. Early diagnosis and treatment of kidney or bladder tumour has higher chances of recovery.

Those with haemophilia may have repeated bleeding episodes (including bleeding into joints, internal organs and other parts of the body), but the recent advances has achieved a near-normal lifespan for patients.
