The major eye problems that a person with diabetes may develop include;

Treatment depends on the type of underlying eye disease.

Diabetic retinopathy: Treatment includes laser procedures or surgery. Your doctor will decide the treatment based on the severity of problem.

Cataract: The damaged lens are removed and may be replaced by lens implant. If needed your doctor may recommend use of glasses or contact lenses as needed to further correct vision.

Glaucoma: Your doctor may recommend special eye drops, laser procedures, medicine, or surgery based on the severity of your eye disease.

Serious eye problems in diabetes can be prevented by;

  • Maintain blood sugar as normal as possible---take your medication regularly as prescribed by your doctor. Go for regular follow up for blood sugar level checking.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Eating a healthy and balanced diet
  • Doing regular exercises
  • Avoiding smoking and alcohol
  • Regular screening from your eye doctor (once a year).

Go for eye exam by a vision professional once a year--early detection and appropriate treatment can reduce your risk of blindness due to eye diseases related to diabetes.
