What is the treatment for Encephaloceles?

Encephaloceles is a birth defect associated with neural tube. When diagnosed, a surgery is performed during infancy to place the protruding tissues back into the skull.

Encephaloceles is a birth defect associated with neural tube. The rare birth-defect affects the brain. The brain and the spinal cord are formed by narrow channel of the neural tube that folds and closes during the third and fourth weeks of pregnancy. The defect occurs when this procedure is affected.

Symptoms

The symptoms of encephaloceles are as follows

  • Excessive accumulation of the cerebrospinal fluid in the brain
  • Very small head
  • seizures
  • Problems with their vision
  • Delayed growth and development
  • Learning difficulties
  • Spasticity or other movement disorders
  • Paralysis in the legs and arms
  • Mental disorders

 

Treatment

When diagnosed, a surgery is performed during infancy to place the protruding tissues back into the skull. The surgical procedure removes the sac, and corrects the associated craniofacial abnormalities.

Even large protrusions can often be removed with surgical procedure, without causing major functional disability. Hydrocephalus associated with encephaloceles may require surgical treatment with a shunt. Other treatment options are symptomatic and supportive.
