Our body consists of two similar temporomandibular joints placed on each side of the head which are located right in front of the ears.
There are many symptoms related to the disorder that can be caused as an effect of physical stress on the structures located around the joint. These structures include:
- Cartilage disk at the joint
- Muscles of the jaw, face, and neck
- Nearby ligaments, blood vessels, and nerves
In many cases the cause of TMJ disorders is not known. However, in some cases the causes cannot be proven. These causes can be:
- A severe bite or orthodontic braces
- Tooth grinding and stress.
Bad posture can also contribute to the development of the condition. for examples of you keep your head holding forward while working on a computer all day can have negative effect on the muscles of face and neck.
Besides, these other factors like stress, poor diet, and sleeplessness can also cause TMJ disorders.
What are the Symptoms of TMH Disorders?
The symptoms of TMJ disorders may include:
- Difficulty in biting or chewing
- Clicking, popping, or grating sound each time the mouth is opened or closed
- Pain in the face
- Pain in the ear
- Pain or tenderness in the jaw
- Locking of jaw
- Problems in opening or closing the mouth
