symptoms of Parathyroid Cancer

Parathyroid cancer is the cancer of the parathyroid glands (small glands located in the neck or upper mediastinum). The cancerous cells disrupt the primary function of the glands, which is to make parathyroid hormone (PTH) to regulate the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood.

The symptoms of parathyroid cancer occur as a result of high levels of calcium in the blood. The symptoms of parathyroid cancer are as follows.

  • A small lump in front of the neck.
  • Kidney stones (indicated by pain in the back or side and blood in the urine).
  • Kidney failure symptoms.
  • Bone pain and osteoporosis.
  • Hoarseness could occur as cancer cells invade the vocal cords or the nerves to the vocal cords.
  • Constipation.
  • Weak muscles.
  • Vomiting.
  • Decreased consciousness.

The rise in calcium level is gradual, sometimes the body is able to adapt and patients have minor symptoms even with calcium levels that would be fatal. As soon as you notice any of the symptoms of pancreatic cancer, it is advised to see a doctor immediately. If he suspects that you have parathyroid, he will refer you to a gastroenterologist or an oncologist.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If you feel a lump in your neck or experience symptoms of hypercalcemia, you should see a doctor. Diagnostic tests such as x-ray need to be done to spot a developing tumour.
