What are the Symptoms of Bunion?

The most common symptom of bunion is the bulge on the outside of the base of your feet. Besides, you may also feel consistent pain in the feet if you suffer from bunion.

What is Bunion?

A bony bulge that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe is known as bunion. A bunion is formed when the big toe pushes against the next toe forcing the joint of the big toe to get bigger and bulge out. The skin formed over the bunion appears to be red and sore.
Tight and narrow shoes might be the cause of bunions or might make them worse. Bunions can also develop as a result of an inherited structural defect, stress on the foot or due to a medical condition like arthritis.

The signs and symptoms of bunion include:

  • A bump on the outside of the base of big toe
  • Swelling, redness or soreness around big toe joint
  • Thickening of skin at base of you big toe
  • Corns or calluses
  • Consistent pain

What are the Causes of Bunion?

When a pressure is created by bearing and shifting of your weight fall on unevenly on the joint and tendons in the feet, it leads to bunion. This uneven balance in pressure makes the big toe joint unstable. This eventually leads to molding the parts of the joint into a hard knob which makes the shape of the foot abnormal.

There is a disagreement by the experts that whether high-heeled or too-narrow shoes can cause bunions or whether footwear type contributes to the development of bunion. The other causes may include:

  • Inherited foot type
  • Foot injuries
  • Deformities present at the time of birth
