Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which a person experiences problems with falling asleep or staying asleep. People who suffer from the condition have the following symptoms:
- Problems with falling asleep
- Waking up over and over during night and facing difficulty falling back to sleep
- Waking up early in the morning
- Feeling tired on waking up
Types of Insomnia
There are two types of insomnia: primary and secondary insomnia. Primary insomnia is a condition in which a person suffers from sleep problems that are not directly related with any other health condition or problem. Secondary insomnia is a condition in which a person experiences problems with having sleep because of something else like a health condition, medication that they are taking or a substance that is being used.
Prognosis for Insomnia
If your insomnia has been caused by jet lag, the symptoms will clear up within few days. But if your insomnia is caused by depression, it won’t go away on its own. You may have to seek a medical evaluation and treatment. The outcome will depend on the coexisting medical conditions which include congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic pain syndromes.
