Prognosis of Campylobacteriosis and its Complications

Campylobacteriosis is a self-limited medical condition that does not have any life-threatening risks. It can, however, have some complications that may haunt the patient for long-term.

Campylobacteriosis tends to be a self-limited medical problem without any cause for worry i.e. to say that it does not cause death, but there can be several possible complications.

Considering that the illness, which is caused by the ingestion of campylobacter bacteria range from mild to severe, the impact of campylobacter infection varies from person to person. While there is a possibility of any person becoming ill with the infection, some groups of people such as very young children, persons with compromised immune system and the elderly are highly likely to develop severe illness.  Some of the complications that may occur as a result of this disease include the following.

•    About 1 in 1000 patients with campylobacter infection develops a rare disease, called Guillain-Barre syndrome, or GBS. This disease sets in a couple of weeks after the campylobacter infection. In this medical condition, the person’s immune system attacks the body’s nerves, causing paralysis that may last for several weeks or even years. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 40 percent of cases of Gullain-Barre syndrome are triggered by campylocater infection.

•    Reactive arthritis is another possible complication of campylobacter infection.
Although, people with the campylobacter infection tend to recover from the disease as well as its complications within a few days, there are some patients with the disease who continue to experience the complication for several years.
