Blood pressure measurement has two numbers ---- systolic pressure on top and diastolic pressure on the bottom like 120/80 or 130/90. Normal blood pressure is lower than 120/80 mmHg. In people with isolated systolic hypertension the systolic pressure is elevated more than 140 mmHg and the diastolic pressure remains less than 90. Isolated systolic hypertension is most often seen in elderly (people over the age of 65).

As, the blood pressure can vary your doctor will take two to three blood pressure readings if possible at different times before diagnosing high blood pressure. If your doctor suspects white coat hypertension he or she may advice repeated blood pressure measurement at clinic and if possible at home. People with "white coat hypertension" have high blood pressure when the BP is measured at a doctor's office or a clinic but their blood pressure is usually normal when taken at home.
