What is Glucose Tolerance Test in gestational diabetes?

Pregnancy Test - The oral glucose tolerance test is used to screen pregnant women for gestational diabetes between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.

To screen for gestational diabetes, you doctor may recommend oral glucose tolerance test. Before the test you will have to fast for 8 hours (or overnight), and a baseline blood sugar level will be assessed. Then you will be given a sweetened liquid, which contains 50g of sugar to drink. This sugar is rapidly absorbed and the blood sugar levels to rise within 30-60 minutes. Blood samples are taken every hour for three hours and tested for blood sugar levels. If at least two of the blood sugar levels are more than the normal expected values you will be diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The test will need to be repeated if only one of the values is elevated.
