What is the Expected Duration of Genital Warts

Genital warts are a type of sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). A person with any kind of STI is naturally going to be concerned about how long the infection or symptoms of genital warts will last. Read on to know how long genital warts may last.


  • Genital warts may appear 6 weeks to 6 months after a person is infected with HPV. In some cases the warts may develop even years after the infection. In fact many people who are exposed to the HPV virus and genital warts do not develop them.
  • Currently there is no cure for genital warts. Treatment can control outbreaks; however, treatment does not cure the HPV infection. Hence, you can develop recurrent warts even after treatment and may infect others. Some people have many recurrences whereas some may have few or no recurrences after the first time. In women, genital warts may appear or increase in number during pregnancy.
  • After infection with human papillomavirus, the immune system of some people may be able to successfully fight off the virus on its own. If the virus is not eradicated from the body it increases the risk of cervical cancer in women.


Currently there is no cure for genital warts and there is no way to predict if you will have warts just once or may have recurrences. Hence it is best to take precautions to prevent genital herpes such as using condoms for all sexual relations, avoiding sex with a person who has genital warts and trying to live within the boundary of a monogamous relationship.
