What is the expected duration of Bladder Cancer?

Bladder cancer is more common in the elderly (older than 65 years) and rarely occurs in people who are younger than 40 years of age.

Expected Duration of Bladder Cancer

Primary bladder cancer:
If the cancer is not treated, it will continue to grow. On an average, the five-year survival rate of bladder cancer is about 84.4 percent. In  the initial stages of the disease (stages 0, I, II), the five-year survival rate of bladder cancer is quite good; It is about 94%, which decreases significantly to about 49% if the cancer has spread within the pelvis (stage III), which further decreases to about 6% in patients with stage IV cancer. Many cases of bladder cancer are diagnosed in the initial stages as hematuria (blood in urine) is an early symptom and is an alarming sign that prompts immediate consultation. About 75 percent of cases of urinary bladder cancer  are diagnosed in the initial stages (when cancer is still confined to the primary site).

Recurrent bladder cancer:
A cancer which recurs (comes back) after it has been treated is known as recurrent cancer. A recurrent cancer may occur in the bladder or in other parts of the body. The risk of recurrence of bladder cancer is quite high. The risk of recurrence is about 15% in one year and 32% in five years after the initial diagnosis in people with low-risk superficial bladder and in the range of 61%-78% at one and five years respectively for high-risk superficial tumours. Hence, regular follow up with your doctor after treatment is important. This helps in earlier diagnosis and gives you a chance to discuss any other changes in health with the doctor.
