Glycated hemoglobin or glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is formed because of reaction of hemoglobin with blood glucose. The test helps to identify the average concentration of glucose in your blood over prolonged periods of time (like the past 2-3 months). In people with diabetes if the blood sugar is not well controlled the level of glycated hemoglobin or HbA1c in blood increases.

  • If your HbA1c is < 6% ---it is considered normal. In non-diabetic people the HbA1C level varies from 3.5-5.5%.
  • HbA1c >6.5% is considered as a criterion for diagnosing diabetes. If you have diabetes and your HbA1c is <6.5% ---your diabetes control is considered good.

HbA1c of 6% approximately corresponds to blood glucose concentration of 135 mg/dl. The mean plasma glucose increases by 35 mg/dl for rise of A1C by 1%.
