What is the diagnosis of Otosclerosis?

An examination by an otolaryngologist or otologist is needed to rule out other diseases or health problems that may cause these symptoms of otosclerosis.

Otosceloris is a disease of the bones of the middle as well as inner ear. In this condition, the bones tend to clump and knit together into masses that are immovable and do not transmit sound as good as when they are flexible.  Most patients with otosclerosis tend to acquire it genetically. It has been found that a person has about 50 percent more chances of getting the gene for otosclerosis if one of the parents has it.

Diagnosis

Otosclerosis is diagnosed by a health care provider who specialises in hearing. Some of these health care providers include otolaryngologist who is commonly called an ENT, audiologist who can identify, measure as well as treat hearing disorders and otologist who specialises in treating diseases of the ears.

One of the first things that your doctor will do is try to identify if there is any underlying medical problem that may be associated with or causing otosclerosis. The next step involves the performance of hearing tests that measure the sensitivity of the ear as well as middle-ear sound conduction. Imaging tests such as a CT scan can also be used for the diagnosis of otosclerosis.

Once a diagnosis is made, it is important to discuss surgery options with your doctor, complications from the same and the limitations of different treatment options. For instance, it has been found that some hearing problems prolong or persist for really long durations and actually worsen hearing loss.
