What is the diagnosis of Dandruff

Considering that the symptoms of dandruff (itchy, dry, and scaly scalp) are quite obvious in itself, dandruff doesn’t need to be formally diagnosed. The dry or white flakes on your scalp in your hair are indicative of seborrhoeic dermatitis. No medical tests are required to identify it.

If you see a doctor, he will examine the redness and colour of the scaling on your scalp to identify the condition. He will check the skin which causes red, flaky, crusty patches of skin and silvery scales to rule out the chances of other conditions that may have similar symptoms. Dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis) appears as reddish patch of skin with mild, greasy, yellow scales and plaques that if rubbed with the finger nails can throw out flakes of white powdery flakes.

When you visit the doctor to seek treatment for the condition, you do not have to prepare beforehand for the appointment. The doctor will examine your scalp and skin to diagnose dandruff and identify its cause. But, you must ensure that you tell your doctor about the hair care or styling products that you have been using. Sometimes, dandruff may be a consequence of using inappropriate styling products.
