Type 1 diabetes occurs due to lack of insulin that results from autoimmune destruction of insulin producing beta cells. Even though there is no proper treatment of this type of diabetes but a healthy lifestyle can reduce complications. Here are some of the ways to control type 1 diabetes include.

Keep check on carbohydrates


Carbohydrates get directly converted to sugar so it is important for diabetics to keep a check on its count. It is essential to keep check intake of carbohydrate in every meal. Unmanaged level of carbohydrates can lead to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or high blood sugar (hyperglycemia).


Keep testing blood sugar level


Regularly test your blood sugar level. Ensure to take medication as prescribed by the physician, either by the injections or orally.  In addition to this a diabetic person must learn to take insulin injection on their own.


Eat in a planned manner


Eat meals and snacks according to the schedule. It is very important for diabetics to stick to a particular schedule for keeping check on sugar intake.


Exercise regularly


Regular exercise plays crucial role in controlling blood sugar level. Beside this it also reduce need of insulin intake. You can choose any kind of exercise, it can be either aerobics or brisk walking but the minimum time duration of exercise must be at least 30 minutes.

By exercising you can reduce diabetes related risks and improve general well being. However it becomes essential to alter the insulin intake in accordance to your physical activity. High dose of insulin and exercise can even lead to hypoglycaemia.


Hypoglycemia and Hyperglycemia


If you suspect any of the symptoms of high or low blood sugar level get tested for it. Remember that keeping a check on blood sugar level is     very important for people with type 1 diabetes.

  • Perspiration, weakness, sudden hunger, shaky or light headedness and irritability are some of the common symptoms of hypoglycemia. If your blood sugar level is low then taking glucose or juice can help.
  • A diabetic person must always carry glucose for immediate treatment of hypoglycaemia.
  • Extreme thirst, dry mouth high fever and weakness on one side of the body are some of the signs of Hyperglycemia. In case your blood sugar level is high immediately treat it with insulin.
