Use of Anti-depressants by Pregnant Women can cause Diabetes and Obesity in their Children

Those women, who take anti-depressants at the time of pregnancy, run a higher risk of raising children who grow up to have obesity and type 2 diabetes.

According to a new study, women who take antidepressants during pregnancy tend to predispose their infants to develop type 2 diabetes and obesity later in their life. The study has found a correlation between use of a medicine named fluoxetine during pregnancy and an increased risk of obesity as well as diabetes in children.


use of antidepressants by pregnant womenAs of now, up to 20 percent of women in the United States and as much as seven percent of Canadian women are prescribed antidepressants at the time of pregnancy.


The senior investigator of the study, Alison Holloway, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University said that obesity as well as type 2 diabetes in children is on a rise and there is significant amount of information that reveals that it is related to lifestyle as well as availability high calorie foods and reduced physical activity. The study has found that maternal antidepressants can contribute to obesity and diabetes epidemic.


The study does not suggest that women should avoid the use of antidepressants at the time of pregnancy, but that there may be risks associated with taking antidepressants that were previously unidentified.
