Urgent Need to Address Hepatitis C and Drug Use: Experts

The experts call for an urgent need to address issues like Hepatitis C and drug use by adolescents in order to prevent spread HIV/AIDS.

Hepatitis CDuring a meeting of North East Harm reduction Networks (NEHRN), the experts called for an urgent need to address issues like Hepatitis C and drug use by adolescents in order to prevent spread HIV/AIDS.

At the 2-day meeting the experts concluded that the draft drug policy should be brought in as soon as possible.

The participants of the meeting included activists, recovering drug users, people suffering from HIV, and representatives of NGOs and government departments.

The programme officer in department of AIDS control, Aditya Singh said ``North East India Harm Reduction Network (NEIHRN) needs visioning exercises to revive and strengthen its partners to compliment and supplement NACP (National AIDS Control Programme) IV’’.

Hepatitis C is a disease which primarily affects the liver and is caused by hepatitis C virus. The symptoms of the disease include decreased appetite, low energy levels, nausea, muscle or joint paint, and weight loss. If left untreated the disease can lead to cirrhosis of liver which can go on to develop liver failure or liver cancer.

The symptoms of acute infections develop in every 1 out of 4 people during the first six months. In some people, the acute hepatitis C infection in cleared by their body’s immune system.

In order to prevent the disease, the cuts and scratches should be covered with appropriate dressings. Blood stained bandages and other items should be disposed properly. Also, to prevent infection tattooing, acupuncture, and ear piercings must be avoided.

Patients who carry the virus must inform their doctors or dentists about the disease.
