The 1 hour glucose tolerance test is done in pregnant women to screen for gestational diabetes. Read on to know why.

The 1 hour glucose tolerance test is done in pregnant women to screen for gestational diabetes. The test is usually done around 24-28 weeks of pregnancy. Gestational diabetes is the type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. It is diagnosed during pregnancy and usually disappears following delivery.

You need not fast prior to this test. For this test you will be given 50 gm of glucose solution which has to be consumed within 5 minutes. As the solution is very sweet you may feel nauseous after drinking it. Blood sample is taken after 1 hour and tested for blood glucose levels.

Based on the blood glucose readings of the 1 hour glucose tolerance test the following diagnoses may be made:

    • Normal screen: if the blood sugar level is <140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L)
    • Abnormal result: If the blood sugar level is >140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L)--- (OGTT is recommended)

If the result of 1 hour glucose tolerance test is abnormal OGTT is recommended.
