When the eyes make involuntarily rapid, repeated and uncontrolled movements, the condition is known as uncontrolled eye movements or nystagmus. The movements can be unilateral or bilateral and are more of asymmetric with directions including left, right, up, down or in a circular way. Though initially, not many of them have symptomatic vision changes, as the condition progresses, the condition causes a decline in vision due to the inability of the eyes to focus on an object. The severity can also lead to poor vision, rhythmic shaking and wobbling eyes that are noticeable. One should understand that eye is one of the most sensitive organs and require great care. Hence, consulting an eye specialist is essential in case of any discomfort.

Symptoms Of Uncontrolled Eye Movement

Depending upon the severity, the uncontrolled movements can be triggered anytime and can vary from being slow to fast, affecting both the eyes. The rapid movements cause the following effects on the vision and eyes –

  • Hard to see in dim light or a blurry vision
  • Vision problems causing sensitivity to light, double or blurred vision
  • Problems in holding the head in a tilted position for long
  • A shaky vision that seems like dizziness
  • A sensation of nausea and vomiting
  • Headache and irritability

Causes Of Uncontrolled Eye Movement

Attributing to various causes, the condition may arise. Apart from being genetic, acquired conditions include overuse of the anti-epileptic drug, congenital eye ailments like cataract, refractive errors, or any injury or trauma to the head or face may also lead to this condition. The actual cause is due to the blockage of the neural pathway between the eye and brain. Binging on alcohol is also one of the reasons leading to this condition.

Risk Factors: With the progression of the condition, the movements may increase causing inability to focus, depleted vision, an underlying cause of congenital cataract that might have developed, any refractive errors may also trigger the condition leading to myopia, hypermetropia.

Treatment Options For Uncontrolled Eye Movements

In congenital cases, if the condition is diagnosed in early stages, medications can help in curbing down the symptoms. While in acquired conditions, medicines along with other therapeutic measures may be given as treatment. Quitting alcohol or drugs that cause shaky vision may also help prevent vision loss. Wearing the right contact glasses can also improve the vision and reduce the symptoms. Eye surgery is the last option, and in very rare cases is preferred.
