Treating Autism Is Possible With Stem Cell Therapy

Autism is a growing concern in the modern-age kids. It is essential to understand the behavioural disorder and work towards treating it with great care

Is it difficult for your child to chat, play, hang out or socialise with others? If yes, then your child may be born with a host of development disorders named as autism. Treating autism is a major concern. A fecent break through is the use of stem cell therapy for complete treatment.  Before it was taken up in movies, the awareness level about autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was almost nil. Autism means a common developmental disorder that some kids are born with or may even develop in their early years. When we talk about the treatment, stem cell therapy is based on the ability of the stem cells to influence metabolism, immune system, communication ability, learning capacity, memory, thinking skill, and restoring damaged cells and tissues. Vipul Jain, CEO, Advancells says, “The main goals when treating children with autism are to lessen associated deficits. However, every treatment is tailored to the child’s needs.”

Signs and Symptoms

Dr Ratan Kumar Vaish, Internal Medicine, Rockland Hospital, tells about the two main categories of symptoms:

Limitations in social presence and communication: In cases of autism in kids, there can be limitations in understanding other people’s emotions and feelings. There can even be a delay in language development. Further then can be the inability to converse and also take part in conversations, including others.

Repetitive patterns in thinking, behaviour: This action can include repeated physical movements like the tapping of hands, twisting or merely becoming upset if repeated movements are disturbed.

About the Therapy

Stem cells can renew on its own and is said to be the best regenerative medicine. Jain adds, “Stem cells are found in adult tissues, such as bone marrow and even in embryos. Their primary role in the body is to maintain and repair tissues. Key areas where stem cell therapy can result in effective treatment are neurological conditions, orthopaedics, COPD, lung diseases, liver diseases, cardiology, autoimmune disorders, ophthalmology diseases, Infertility and cosmetic procedures.”

The Right Time

The patient is diagnosed based on his/her medical history. Then, stem cell is extracted and processed in labs before re-implanting it in the patient’s body. Treatment procedures may extend to 2 or 3 sessions, depending on the results. Vipul says, “The response to this therapy depends on case to case basis. Usually, children start showing improvements from the first session itself. The child may take 3-4 sessions of therapy spread over five years.”

Popularity in India

Some other applications of stem cells are being investigated in clinical trials, including the use of stem cells to regenerate damaged tissues – such as heart, skin, bone, spinal cord, liver, pancreas and cornea – or to treat blood or solid-organ cancers. The majority of these trials are using mesenchymal stem cells, which are derived from sources such as fat tissue, bone marrow and connective tissue. Bone marrow transplants successful in such cases where the cells do what they are meant to, which is making more blood. For other conditions, we may want the cells to behave in ways that are different from how they would ordinarily work in the body.
