Regardless of sex and age we all can become vulnerable to hair loss. To prevent hair loss one needs to take proper care of one’s health with a special emphasis on scalp and hair.


Diet and Nutrition


The first step to prevent hair fall is to take account of all that you eat and fail to eat. Are you getting enough vitamins A, B (complex), C and E besides a reasonable dose of protein, calcium, zinc and iron? Consult a nutritionist who can help you prepare a diet chart that will get you most of these and more vital nutrients required for a healthy body and consequently a healthier head full of hair. Normally, for a fit individual, a breakfast of milk and eggs followed by lunch of lean meat and green salad should provide much nutrition. This should be followed by a snack of nuts and fruits. Over dinner, crunchy and colourful vegetables and perhaps a smaller portion of lean meat should be in accordance. Add to these lots of water to ensure hydration.


Caffeine, Alcohol & Nicotine


These three culprits combined with stress are most detrimental to the health of your hair. Caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes usually form the unholy trinity which becomes a cycle and to escape one we fall into the clutches of the other. Normally, the underlying reason behind making such bad habits is stress.


Stress is one of the major causes of hair fall. Especially, if you’re genetically prone to lose hair stress will make sure you they fall at a greater pace. Keep stress away by meditating regularly, enjoying a healthy social life and finding time for recreation.



Good blood flow ensures stronger hair. Exercising for as little as 30 minutes every day will ensure that. If you are medically advised against brisk activity ask your doctor if you can perform easier forms of yoga and maybe take short walks.


Taking Care


Once the inner well-being is ensured we must work to take care of our hair from the outside. Avoid harsh shampoos and conditioners. If you cannot find a mild shampoo opt for the counterpart meant for babies. However, if you spend a great deal of time outside in dust and pollution it may not clean your hair properly which could damage your hair further. Be careful not to over shampoo though if you use a regular product. As for styling most products are chemical based. Men should look for pure beeswax to mould hair instead of gel. Women should avoid sprays and mousse besides hot irons, curlers etc. Use natural oils to nourish the hair and both sexes must not use colours or dyes. Pure and crushed henna leaves provide a brilliant red tinge to hair and act as a conditioner.


If you have suffered from a hormonal imbalance in the past or men who have androgenic alopecia in their family history may want to consult a trichologist early on before any symptoms of hair loss begin. The doctor will be able to advice if it’s possible in your case to avoid future hair fall or what you can expect in the likely occurrence of the event.
