Skin careDark elbows and knees are nothing to be worried about from a medical perspective; they are merely a cosmetic or a superficial problem. Nevertheless they can be a source of embarrassment for some people on a hot, summer’s afternoon. This article is intended to help you treat your dark elbows and knees so you can expose them without any shame!

Home Remedies to Lighten Dark Elbows and Knees

There are many commercial products on the market – bleaches, creams or lotions – which promise to lighten your darkened skin, but the indirect consequences of applying such treatments can offset their primary function; lightening your dark skin. They may cause itchy irritations or swelling, or may even make the area worse than it already was.

Home remedies tend to be temperate on your skin as they typically contain items from the shelf in your pantry. They usually have a proven track record of treating a condition effectively, safely and - since you didn’t have to go to the doctor or the pharmacy – cheaply!

Everyone has lemon juice in their fridge; it has bleaching capabilities, but it contains no clandestine chemicals which some commercial bleaches contain. Dip a piece of cotton wool into some freshly squeezed lemon-juice and apply it gently to your dark elbows and knees, rubbing it in until it's been soaked through. Leave for 15-20 minutes, for it to take effect before rinsing it all off; you can do this two or three times a day and you should see some positive results in a couple of days.

Try to keep your elbows and knees moisturised using a mixture of green tea and cocoa butter, or by spreading honey on them for a few minutes and letting it soak through.

If you have delicate knees which are susceptible to darkening easily, then avoid kneeling or using them for any physical activity. They obviously don’t take well to hardship.

The baseline for maintaining good quality skin is drinking at least two litres of water a day and keeping a healthy lifestyle (a steady diet and lots of exercise). Before you exercise any of the above tips, make sure you are at this line at least. If you are, then try these treatments for dark elbows and knees and you’ll be surprised at how your skin lightens up in a matter of days.
