The Ayurvedic way of life focusses on balance of the three key aspects of life -- physical, mental and spiritual. The age-old healing science focuses on balance of all the elements in the body as per each person’s constitution. It is against going either of the two extremes of deprivation and overindulgence.
Ayurveda also links a healthy daily routine to attain happiness in long run and keep depression at bay. One of the biggest reason people are happy is because they keep comparing themselves with the others. However, the ancient science of Ayurveda says one must do things according to our nature or prakriti and that would bring satisfaction as well as happiness to us.
Dr. Zeel Gandhi, an Ayurvedic doctor and a formulator for Vedix, says it is due to the imbalances in our modern lifestyle that we often find ourselves distressed or unhappy. She shares ways to lead a happy and contented life as per Ayurveda.
Tips To Lead A Happy And Contended Life
#1. Choose Long-term Health Benefits Over Short Term Pleasures
Ayurveda says that we have two choices in life. You may choose the things that give you pleasure but do not make you happy in long run. For example, gossiping about someone can be a pleasurable exercise, but it doesn't do anything to make your happiness last. Consumption of junk food or alcohol can be enjoyable, but very harmful for health.
Similarly, there are things that are good for one’s health but don't give any pleasure. Eating certain kinds of food is not enjoyable, but if they are beneficial for your health, it will make you happy in the long run. Setting up a routine for exercising may not immediately feel good, but bring long-term benefits. People many a time are unhappy because they don't make the right choice.
#2. Don’t Overindulge Or Under-indulge
Ayurveda recommends you to not overindulge or under-indulge your senses - eyes, smell, taste buds which means one should neither deprive oneself nor go overboard. If you are depriving yourself of something, you are bound to crave for it which will make you unhappy. Similarly, if you excessively indulge your senses, you will burn yourself out. There are certain addictions that might be making you unhappy because of overindulgence. It is realizing where to draw the line that brings happiness.
#3. Have A Healthy Routine
For happiness, Ayurveda suggests you to have a healthy routine or dincharya with a fixed time to wake up, eat, and do other important things. Even modern science has supported where routine is known to be good for mental health of children, adults and elderly alike. People who do not have a routine or wake up late have more chances of suffering from depression than those who streamline their day. It is also recommended to be in sync of nature and consume seasonal foods.
#4. Celebrate Your Uniqueness
A lot of our unhappiness has roots in comparing ourselves to others. The Ayurvedic way of life stresses on uniqueness. Each person is born with a prakriti or nature. One must be true to his/her nature in order to be truly happy. If we celebrate our uniqueness and do not compare us with others, it is bound to make us happy and contended with what we have.
With stress affecting every aspect of our daily life, it is important to choose a way of life that brings happiness and satisfaction to us. While there are things that might not be in our control, following a set of basic rules and having a clarity in life could make things simpler for us.
