Reasons for infertility

A recent study claims that the most common reason behind female infertility is poor working conditions. This study, conducted at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public, suggests that females, who work or lift things a lot, struggle to get pregnant. It is because of the heavy work, both in terms of physical strain and long hours, that has a detrimental impact on a woman’s ability to get pregnant.

The researchers studied work patterns of women who were infertile. About 44 percent were overweight or obese, 22 percent were smokers and 16 percent had to work in rotating shifts at different times.

According to the researchers, working conditions has a certain connection with fertility. For instance, while certain working conditions may make pregnancy more likely, others tend to make it more difficult.

Among other reasons that can make a woman infertile include:

  • Problems with ovulation
  • Damaged or blocked fallopian tubes
  • Medical conditions such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), uterine fibroids and scar tissue in the reproductive organs
  • Birth defects causing an abnormally shaped uterus
  • Early menopause

How to boost fertility?

  • Take control of your weight; being underweight or overweight can delay the time it takes to conceive.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol as it can affect chances of fertility.
  • Eat a healthful diet and stay active.
  • Take advantage of the fertility window.

If you plan to have a baby, make sure you work out the best possible option by taking advice from your gynaecologist on work and work conditions.
