Getting pregnant may not be as easy as it seems as many couples find out. Research has shown that only 20 out of 100 couple hoping for pregnancy succeed in their effort in the first month. But various studies have pin pointed ways of increasing your odds of getting pregnant. Timing, hygiene and other issues can affect your chances of pregnancy. If you are aware of the best practices to get pregnant, your chances would improve a lot.

  • Know your menstrual cycle – You should be aware of your menstrual cycle, whether it is regular or irregular. If irregular, how many days apart. You should know that women ovulate not on Day 14 of the cycle but 14 days before the start of the next period. But women having a 26-day cycle ovulate on Day 12 while those who have a 30-day cycle ovulate on Day 18. If you find your cycles lasting for many days, it may mean you are not ovulating at all. You should see your doctor for blood tests that could reveal your hormone levels.
  • Just before ovulation – Just prior to ovulation, mucus which is typically thick undergoes a change. You need to watch out for this change and refrain from having sex for two days when this happens. Save up the sperm for improved supply during ovulation.
  • A few days before ovulation, the typically thick mucus starts to change. Watch for the change, and save sperm up by not having sex for a day or two when you notice mucus changing. This ensures an adequate supply around ovulation.
  • Include your partner – Do not forget your partner if you want to ensure that he has the required sperm count. Ask him to give up certain habits such as smoking which bring down the sperm count. Moreover, habits such as having very hot baths or keeping the laptop directly on the lap can have an adverse effect on the sperm quality. Keep in mind that production of new sperms occur in 80 days.
  • Do not perform vigorous exercises – Many women are unable to ovulate because they do not have enough fat in their body needed for ovulation. Over-exercising can cause infertility as found by the “Human reproduction” study. Before making your partner stop smoking, you should begin by quitting yourself.
  • Ideal sex positions for conceiving – Many women are often curious about whether they can change their positions to help them conceive. Missionary and “rear entry” are two most favoured ones. The one you should most definitely avoid is the woman on top position. Gravity would not allow sperms to move up. Other than missionary position, rear entry can also be considered for improving chances of conception as it has the advantage of placing the sperms closer to the cervix.
