A girl is applying lipstickWhen a young girl first begins to use make-up, she may end up using more than she should. Young skins look fresh with less make-up. It is helpful to experiment with make-up. Dark colours, like maroon and brown can also have an aging effect. The effort should be to accentuate your features.

Be natural

Today's trends favour the natural look; sheer and translucent, with subtle use of foundation. Avoid foundation during the day. After cleansing, apply an astringent lotion, wait for a few minutes and then apply powder. Pay attention to the oily areas of the face, like nose, forehead and chin. Press the powder all over the face and neck, with a slightly damp sponge.

Foundation can only be used to cover-up pimples. The best way to do this is to take a little bit of creamy foundation and apply it directly and avoid rubbing. Instead, pat it into the skin and then apply loose powder. Powder can help control oil and produce an even colour tone. For oily skin, you can only use powder compact.

At night, choose a water-based foundation. Adding a drop of water will give you a lighter coverage. But remember to blend well. After applying it use a moist sponge, spread it evenly. Apply foundation on the eyelids too.  Blend well. Remember the neck too. The entire effect should be natural. Then apply powder to set the foundation.

Use a blusher, but be subtle. Blushers come in powder, cream and even gel form. Use a powder blusher, as they are much easier to apply. Apply on the cheekbones and slightly below it. You can use your finger tips to dot the area with blusher. Then, blend with the brush, making sure there are no blotchy effects. Choose a shade that would subtly enhance your skin tone. Pink or peach blusher would suit most skin tones. For fair skin, try pinks and reds. Avoid orange if you have yellowish skin. For olive complexions, try rose pink or coral. For dark skin, plum, wine or bronze colours would suit.

Eye shadow

For the eyes, use a brown eye shadow on the eyelids. Try using the same brown shadow under the lower lashes, instead of eyeliner or kaajal. Take a darker brown eye shadow and apply it on the upper lid, close to the upper lashes. The entire effect will be natural. If you want to line the eyes, use an eye pencil. Give your eyes a light touch of mascara. For a young girl, dark smoky eyes, loads of mascara and false eye lashes would be too much.

For your lips

For the lips, plain gloss can be enough for the day, or add a touch of gloss over a light pink lipstick. Too much gloss would highlight the lips more. Choose a light colour, pink or mauve. Avoid using lip liners and just brush the lips with lipstick, going for shades of pink, pale pink, to rose or tawny pink. At night, you can go for rose, coral or bronze. Avoid dark red or maroon lipstick for the night. They make you look much older.

Avoid an elaborate hairdo. If your hair is long, you can leave it loose, or wear it in a pony tail. You can use a satin ribbon, co-ordinating it with your clothes. For short hair, straight layered styles and a broken texture have been in. New trend will be long hair, with curls and waves at the ends. Varied lengths of fringing are also in. Girls with long hair have also been going for simple straight cuts. Straight hair with jagged edges, whether short or shoulder length has been in for some time, but now the soft, layered style ending with waves and curls is in.

Winning query

I use cream for my dark circles under the eyes, but it makes make-up look dull.  Please suggest how to get rid of dark circles?

Apply under-eye cream daily, but wipe it off with moist cotton wool after 20 minutes. Dark circles can be caused due to hereditary factors, nutritional deficiencies, stress, inadequate sleep, sun sensitivity, etc. So, along with external care, you should check these aspects. As a home remedy, daily apply pure almond oil sparingly around eyes and massage it lightly on the skin. Leave on for 15 minutes and wipe off gently with moist cotton wool. You can also mix cucumber juice and potato juice in equal quantities. Apply under eyes daily for 20 minutes. Wash it off with water. Before going out, apply a sunscreen lotion sparingly under the eyes.
