Take care when visiting India for CWG

Tips for tourists to stay healthy during the 19th Commonwealth Games hosted by India.

indiaWith just a couple of days left for India to host the 19th Commonwealth Games (CWG) there are innumerable apprehensions for many tourists as well as participants about India, specifically on health issues. So, in all hopes that you keep healthy throughout your stay in India we have a few tips for you:


Up-to-date Vaccination

Whether you are an intending spectator or a participant you must make sure your vaccinations are up-to-date. Be wise and get yourself vaccinated against the following few:

  • Dengue: Due to prolonged monsoons dengue has almost caused a great scare in Delhi. Make sure you don’t contract dengue by getting yourself vaccinated as a major priority. Dr. Lona Mohapatra of Rockland Hospitals advises that “tourists travelling to any place where the risk of dengue exists, they should carry with them prescription antimalarial and antipyretic drugs (paracetamol) and ensure that they wear full-sleeved clothes, sleep in air-conditioned or well-screened rooms and use bed-nets.”
  • Malaria: Since it is spread by insect bites, one must use repellents which contain DEET (N, N-diethylmetatoluamide).
  • H1N1 or Swine flu:  With vaccines available, swine flu is not a serious threat now but one must understand that the risk of respiratory illness is greater in a crowded place and should take due precaution like?
  • Influenza Vaccines: Early October is the time when seasonal influenza is on an all time high, thus one needs to take due precautions to protect themselves against influenza.
  • Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B.
  • Typhoid.
  • Tetanus.
  • Measles.


take careMaintain personal hygiene

  • Keep an alcohol based hand sanitizer.
  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Practice adequate and appropriate sneeze and cough etiquettes.
  • Avoid company of people who are infected with water-borne or flu like illness.
  • Carry bottled water.
  • Avoid street food.


Weather Wise:

  • Capital city, Delhi experiences pleasant weather in October, so carry a bagful of weather-appropriate clothes.
  • Avoid going in the sun too often.
  • Carry sunscreen lotions. The daily use of a low SPF sunscreen (15) has been shown to be more effective in preventing skin damage


As an advice to tourists, Dr Mohopatra says, “They must select accommodations with well-screened windows or air-conditioning when possible. An Aedes mosquito known to cause dengue typically lives indoors and is often found in dark, cool places such as in closets, under beds, behind curtains and in bathrooms.”


What if you fall sick before or after coming to Delhi, India?

  • The key to prevent the spread of any contagious infection is isolation. Keep to yourself and get back to regular activities once you are symptom free.
  • Beware of counterfeit drugs and buy medicines from registered pharmacies only.
  • Avoid over-the-counter medication; use prescribed medication. 
  • Takes medically prescribed medicines and follow quarantine measures as advised by your health care provider.
  • If you fall prey to any sickness before coming to India, it is advisable that you recover and then pursue your travel plans to Delhi.


Eventually, your health is in your hands and once you follow the above mentioned points there is no way any illness could last for long!
