Many people may accept the fact that they cannot have a child. Others may go for adoption or fostering, but some couple may desire their own biological child. Surrogacy can be considered as treatment option for couples who or else would not be able to have children. In surrogacy a pact is made between a woman and a couple or individual to carry and deliver their baby. The pact may be made through an agency and privately. The surrogate mother may be known to you like family or friend or may be complete strangers.
Who opts for Surrogacy
Women or couples who may choose surrogacy include
- Women who are unable to conceive due to a missing or abnormal uterus,
- Women who have had multiple pregnancy losses,
- Women who are unable to carry a child to term
- Women with certain medical conditions such as dangerously high blood pressure, a heart condition or liver disease, that makes pregnancy a serious health risk for them.
- Women who have had multiple failed attempts of in vitro fertilization
The benefit of surrogacy is that if the embryo is created from the woman’s egg and the man’s sperm, the child is genetically and biologically theirs.
What should you consider before surrogacy
When opting if surrogacy is right for you there are certain things that you must consider
- Your financial and physical abilities
- Your emotions as well as those of your spouse and family
You should understand the entire surrogacy process well, the arrangements and experiences you may have before deciding to go ahead with surrogacy arrangement.
Different types of surrogacies
The surrogate mother that you are considering may be a stranger, whom you have never met, or a person-- whom you have met occasionally, or you have met and become quite close over time. At time the surrogate mother may be a family or friend.
The two main types of surrogacy are
- Gestational surrogacy and
- Traditional surrogacy
Gestational Surrogacy: This type of surrogacy is most preferred as the parents feel more secure in knowing that the possibility of the surrogate being able to keep their baby is negligible. As the genetics of their baby is their own they feel more in control of the surrogacy and pregnancy and their friends and family are more receptive to their participation in a surrogacy as they also feel that the child is theirs. If the surrogate does not give the ovum and is only the gestational mother it separates the emotional issue of being a gestational and genetic donor/mother.
Egg Donor: At times the prospective parents may not be able to genetically contribute to their offspring and may not want the gestational surrogate to be the genetic mother. In these cases the prospective parents may have to depend on outside assistance via sperm and or egg donation. The egg is harvested from a woman who is healthy. The eggs are examined to see if they are healthy and they are then may be frozen for use later or immediately mixed with sperm from the intended father or a sperm donor. The egg or the sperm or both may be taken from a donor if required.
