The Supreme Court had on Thursday issued a notice to the Centre as well as all the states on a public interest litigation seeking a ban on cigarettes as well as bidis in the country.

The Supreme Court had on Thursday issued a notice to the Centre as well as all the states on a public interest litigation seeking a ban on cigarettes as well as bidis in the country. The move is also likely to pose as a major setback for the smokers as well as people who are involved in the tobacco trade.

smoking ban in IndiaAccording to the Cigarette and other Tobacco Product (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Supply and Distribution, COPTA) Act 2003, the selling of tobacco as well as other related products has been banned within 100 meters of educational institutes, airports as well as to minors. This was, however, not strictly implemented so far.

India had also banned smoking in public places at least six years ago though violations have been multiple in the country.

While smoking tops the list of leading causes of preventable death worldwide, tobacco has been shown to kill nearly 6 million people every year.
