According to a study by the Harvard School of Public Health, vitamin D deficiency, which is a common phenomenon among Indians, increases a person’s risk of getting type 1 diabetes. The study also revealed that having adequate levels of vitamin D during one’s childhood reduced the risk of adult-onset diabetes by about 50 percent.
If the findings are confirmed, it may lead to the role of vitamin D supplementation in the preventing the disease from developing in adults. Lead author, Kassandra Munger from the Harvard School of Public Health said that people who protect themselves from the sun by wearing a lot of clothing, have a diet that is low in fatty fish, have darkly-pigmented skin are highly likely to have low levels of vitamin D levels.
