The summer season is almost here and the temperature is rising day by day. Due to this rising temperature three suspected sunstroke deaths have been reported in Kerala. Sunstroke is a serious condition in which a person experiences heat injury caused by overheating or exposure to external heat. It can cause serious injury to a person which requires emergency treatment.

The officials suspected three deaths due to sunstroke. Out of which, Karunakaran,42, fainted during his working hours in his paddy field. He was a state government employee and was rushed to the nearest local hospital where he was declared dead. For final postmortem, he was shifted to the state-run Medical college. The doctors noticed burn marks on his shoulders on the basis of which it was suspected as a sunstroke case.

Similarly, in Kannur Narayanan, an elderly person fell unconscious and suffered from a few sunburns. As the condition worsened after some time he was declared dead. In the third case reported a hotel employee was found dead on the roadside.

The officials have advised the citizens to take precautions to prevent themselves from the heat as much as possible.

How to prevent a sunstroke?

Some simple ways to prevent a sunstroke may include:

  • Apply sunscreen after regular intervals
  • Wear loose and lightweight clothes
  • Stay hydrated and consume as much as liquid possible
  • Do not step out during the hottest time of the day
  • Keep children protected as much as possible
  • Pay attention to symptoms and consult a doctor as soon as possible
  • Eat more fruits loaded with water
