Study: Fatty Food Ads Triggering Obesity Epidemic

A recent research study claims that a mere sight of high calorie foods triggers hunger. The study puts advertisements on food responsible for obesity as they activate brain’s appetite control centre, leading to increased desire/craving for food. Moreover, the research explained that having drinks with added sweeteners can stimulate brain to crave for food. The study lashed out at the food promotions blaming them to be cause of overeating.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) technique was used to determine the brain responses of 13 obese young Hispanic women. Participants had two brain scans. In the first scan, they viewed images of high calorie foods, such as ice cream and cupcakes. The second scan noted the brain’s response to low calorie foods, such as fruits and vegetables. It was observed that pictures of high calorie food increased hunger and the desire for sweet foods.

The detailed study report was presented at the 94th annual meeting of The Endocrine Society in Houston, USA.
