Skinny Women Have Low Fertility

When it comes to fertility, skinny women face more fertility problems than the overweight women. Nowadays, women go on fad diets to be in shape and the problem is exacerbated by the culture of “size-zero”. These days large number of women are striving to follow skeleton look of celebrities and models.

According to Richard Sherbahn, fertility expert of the Advanced Fertility Centre of Chicago, women are so occupied by the thought of staying away from excess weight that they often don’t consider the consequences of being skinny.

A study conducted at the Advanced Fertility Centre of Chicago, showed that skinny women are less likely to conceive when compared to the overweight and even the obese women. For the study researchers studies 2,500 In vitro fertilisation (IVF) sessions for over eight years. Depending on their weight, women were divided into three groups .i.e. obese, normal and very thin. The obese group include some women who were dangerously obese. Results showed that

  • 50 per cent of women from normal weight group had babies.
  • 45 per cent of women in obese weight group had babies.
  • Only 34 per cent of very thin (skinny) women had babies.

There are many studies that have hinted that being underweight is worst than being overweight but the reason was not clear. With the study conducted by Sherbahn and his team, it is now known that women who are very thin become less fertile due to fall of female sex hormone named oestrogen.

Post study Sherbahn also pointed out that most women are unaware of the extent of damage that can be caused to their fertility by being too thin.

While presenting the study at annual conference of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, researcher said that women who are trying to get pregnant either naturally or with the aid of any fertility treatment must try to get their ideal weight.
