Six legged Baby Successfully OperatedMedical staff of National Institute of Child Health (NICH) has successfully operated the baby boy born with six legs in Karachi, Pakistan. As per reports, newborn is in a stable condition now after removal of extra limbs in a medical operation that lasted for over two hours.

Six-legged boy was born in a small town of Sukkur to the wife of an X-ray technician a week ago. He was brought to Karachi for treatment, reported by Jamal Raza, director of the NICH in Karachi.

Raza explained birth defect, “It is not one baby actually. They are two, one of them is premature”. Commenting further, director told press that the doctors are examining infant to plan for necessary treatment so that he lives a normal life.

This birth defect is ascribed as ‘mermaid syndrome’ in medical terms, a deformity in which legs of newborns are fused. A medical expert at National Institute of Child Health (NICH) said that congenital malady of extra limbs occurs due to a genetic disorder, but is the rarest with occurence chances being 1 in a million.

Prominent gynaecologist and President of Pakistan Medical Association, Dr. Samrina Hashmi quoted, “The abnormality in the baby could be because of several factors, including improper medicines taken by the pregnant mother and contaminated water. In every 10,000 child births one baby is born with an abnormality such as a hole in the heart. Then, there is also a possibility that several eggs were fertilised instead of one."

Among other such birth defects are craniopagus syndrome, wherein babies are joined at the head and dicephalic parapagus where a newborn body has two heads. Such births have proved challenging for the medical world over the years.

Imran Shaikh, baby’s father thanked the government of Pakistan for medical treatment of his son and urged natives to pray for baby’s early and complete recovery.
