Sitting for Long Hours may give you Fat Buttocks

Sitting at one place for long hours can make your butt fat.

Sitting for Long Hours may give you Fat ButtocksIn a recent study, the researchers from the Tel Aviv University found that sitting in an office for long hours can influence the size of one’s bottom. This problem has been termed derriere. The researchers scanned the buttocks of inactive people and found that their muscles were breaking down and shrinking due to lack of exercise. The study also found that people with a sedentary lifestyle tend to accumulate fat cells in their buttocks, thereby causing thick layers of fat to develop inside the muscle tissue.

A poor diet and insufficient activity are some of the common causes of desk derriere, though there are others factors too that may contribute to the same. Chris Jones, professional head of physiology at Nuffield Health explained that the hip flexor muscles that are found at the front of the hip become tight and overactive when an individual spends all his/her time sitting. He also added that with sitting for long hours at a stretch, the key muscles that shape the buttocks, namely the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus become underactive and less responsive causing poor muscle tone.

The gluteal muscles are important for they stabilize and control the movement of the pelvis, lower back and legs. Jones said that women are more likely to store fat on the bottom while men are more likely to store fat around the hips.
