As we battled against coronavirus, many people are battling another wave- but this time, it is the stress or sadness of staying indoors, uncertainty of the future, unable to meet their loved ones, job and salary cuts and many more. Feeling stressed temporarily is considered healthy for our cells at the cellular level. It is the ongoing stress over a long period of time, which has accumulated over years can be detrimental to our health. 1# Boost Happy hormone

We can uplift our moods by uplifting our happy hormones. In order to uplift our mood, we need both serotonin and tryptophan rich foods. Research shows that without healthy carbohydrates serotonin cannot pass through our blood-brain barrier. While tryptophan is essential for the production of serotonin hormones, carbohydrates are important for the transport of serotonin in the brain. Foods like pumpkin seed, sunflower seeds, banana, brown rice, millets, quinoa, dark chocolate, spinach helps in uplifting our mood. A simple milkshake made from milk, pumpkin seeds, banana and chocolate powder can uplift our mood. Ashwagandha is a nerve tonic. It is an adaptogenic herb. Add 1 teaspoon of Ashwagandha powder in your drink to uplift your mood.

2# Black coffee

Research also shows that drinking black coffee can help in uplifting our mood. But it should be noted that excess consumption of black coffee can cause depression and it can also lead to dehydration. It is recommended to have only 4 cups of black coffee a day and the rule is, for each cup of black coffee, one must drink 2 glasses of water.

3# Eat more fruits and vegetables

Eating fruits and vegetables helps in developing new cells in our brain. It increases a compound called BDNF (Brain derived neurotrophic factor), a compound which helps in the availability of happy hormones. Plant foods like apples, berries, onions, green leafy vegetables, walnuts, chia seeds, tomatoes can help in uplifting our mood. 

4# Green tea

If you want to uplift your mood swap your masala tea with green tea. A compound called catechins in green tea, white tea and black tea helps in uplifting our mood. It also has many other health benefits like weight loss and reduction in high cholesterol which can happen when we feel depressed and eat more food. 

5# Herbs

There are some herbs in available in our kitchen which can helps us uplifting our mood. Our Indian spices like cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg tops the chart. If you add a pinch of nutmeg to your milk and consume this milk before bed it helps in relaxation and it also helps relieving stress. Other spices like cloves, cinnamon, saffron can be used in food preparation. Saffron has shown benefits in reducing anxiety.

For some easy home remedies for stress relief

  • Put one drop of pure castor oil on the sole of your feet before going to bed, this provides a calming or a soothing effect to the body. 
  • Nasya kriya in which 4-5 drops of ghee can be added to the nostrils (each nostril) for immediate relief. 
  • Take a break if something is stressing you. 
  • Exercise, have a sound sleep, read a book, practice self-care routine, meditate and do yogic breathing, walk in the garden to uplift your mood. 

At the end give yourself some time, relax and create a happy space for yourself .
