Researchers have finally confirmed the link between consumption of red meat as well as risk of breast cancer in women.
People have since a long time been having debates on the possible effects of eating red meat on health. Even though a lot of studies that were done previously have shown that those women who eat red meat tend to experience an increase in their risk of breast cancer. But, researchers have said that these studies focus on older women.
The new data that was published in the latest edition of the British Medical Journal, shows that young women who eat a lot of red meat tend to increase their risk of developing breast cancer much earlier in life.
The data was gathered by a group of researchers from the Harvard University, who looked at data on over 88,000 premenopausal women, who had taken part in the famous Nurses’ Health Study II. All the participants who took part in the study completed a questionnaire on diet in the year 1991 when the women were between the age groups of 36 to 45. The investigators found that women who ate a lot of red meat had about 22 percent increase in their risk of developing breast cancer.
Those women who had eaten more poultry, vegetables, nuts with less meat had 17 percent lower risk of breast cancer. The researchers believe that replacing red meat with a combination of other, less fatty proteins is likely to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer.
Even though the study is a good beginning, more researchers in the field is necessary to understand the relationship that exists between diet at a very early age and the risk of breast cancer later in life.
