Regular Sleep-Wake Habits Improve Sleep in Children

A recent study found that if regular sleep-wake routine is followed in the household, it improves a child’s sleep quality and duration.

Sleep Quality ImprovementA new study from Pennsylvania University in US found that if a regular sleep-wake routine is followed in the house, it not only lets the kids have a good quality sleep but it also helps them enable age-appropriate sleep duration.

The study published in the journal Sleep Health showed that consumption of limited caffeine, regular bedtime and reduced interaction with gadgets in the evening played a significant role in maintaining sleep hygiene and lead to improved sleep quality and duration.

The team of researchers tried to understand how families approach sleep thus, they assessed a total of
1,103 parents or guardians of children between ages of 6 and 17 living in the US.

Out of the total participants 54 percent females. All of these participants completed surveys and members of research team interviewed them over the Internet.

Although 90 percent of the participants understood the importance of sleep yet, their children did not sleep as many hours as recommended for their age group.

The co-author of the study and assistant professor of biobehavioural health at Penn State said “We have previously demonstrated the negative effect that use of light-emitting technology before bedtime can have on sleep, and now in this study we see how parental rules and routines regarding technology can influence the quantity and quality of their children’s sleep”.
