Psychological Effects of Diabetes

Depression, denial and embarrassment are some psychological effects of diabetes which hamper prompt treatment.

Detection of diabetes can bring about a string of psychological responses in a patient. From denial, depression, anger to anxiety, it causes several unwelcome emotions. What would you say about an uninvited guest who comes to dinner, demands complete attention, and the worst part is that he even changes your menu and insists that you stick to what he recommends? That is the impact of diabetes diagnosis on some people.

One of the major psychological effects of diabetes is denial. The very fact that their whole life would now need to be regulated insulin shots, pills and finger poking for glucose testing, is too much for some people to take normally. Other health concerns natural with diabetes such as heart disease, stroke, and the need to be disciplined about eating; bewilder people so much that they simply refuse to believe in them. They tend to be in denial and not care for their body as much as they should. This aggravates their condition.

Some people feel sad, confused and helpless after being diagnosed with diabetes. That has the potential to worsen the disease and besides, depression is a very serious medical condition all by itself. Professional counselling or medication may be needed for this too. Weakening of immunity and lack of physical activity are two complications of depression that aggravate diabetes.

Many people feel embarrassed about their condition. This is because they find that carrying around insulin, glucose measuring equipment, syringes or putting on an insulin pump would look odd on them. This effect is specifically visible when they have to take their reading in a public place.

It is quite often the last step of the psychological effects. The diabetic realises that he will have to make changes in his lifestyle, so that his life can be more productive with the complications under control.

Any of the first four negative responses have the ultimate result of getting in the way of treatment. If you are diagnosed with this dreaded condition some day, watch out for your reaction. Being forewarned, you can now look to take the right perspective of diabetes. Otherwise, if you fall prey to any of these responses, the treatment can be that bit more difficult. Your condition is likely to worsen with an aggravated diabetic condition.
