Pregnant Women to Abstain from Alcohol

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy is unsafe, say experts.

Pregnant Women to Abstain from Alcohol

A team of experts at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine voiced against several studies that suggested consumption of up to 8 alcoholic drinks to be safe during pregnancy. The studies conducted by the experts in the past, published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology analysed over 1600 women in the Danish National Birth Cohort. The amount of alcohol that was consumed by these women was categorised as none, low, moderate or high. Binge drinking was defined by the experts as taking 5 or more drinks on a special occasion.

The children of women, who indulged in binge drinking, were made to go through development tests at the age of 5. Although, no significant changes were seen, the experts who claim that alcohol is bad for pregnant women found that only half of the women, who were invited for the study, agreed to participate in it. Christina Chambers, MPH, Phd, Director of the California Teratogen Information Service Pregnancy Health and Information Line, said that individual women metabolise alcohol differently and therefore whether it is safe for a pregnant woman to indulge in alcohol is safe or not is difficult to establish.
