People with High Blood Pressure may Crave Salt

Several studies in the past have linked high-salt diets to high blood pressure, but a recent research finds that those affected by high blood pressure condition have a greater preference for salty foods than those with normal blood pressure.

The researchers at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil studied eating patterns of 44 older adults, including 16 with normal blood pressure readings. It was found that the participants with high blood pressure, or hypertension, preferred bread dusted with the highest concentration of salt more than twice as much as those with normal blood pressure. Moreover, they added other seasonings to the salted bread, however, diminished the preference for salt across both groups.

The research was presented at scientific conferences, not been peer-reviewed or published, and the results are considered preliminary.
