Patients Follow the Advice of Fit Doctors

New research has revealed that patients are not inclined to take the advice of their doctor if they do not look fit. The study undertaken by the researchers of the School of Medicine at John Hopkins University has shown that doctors should practice what they preach if they want to treat their patients who are overweight or obese.

The research shows that doctors who are overweight themselves also tend to avoid discussing weight loss problems with their patients. Only 18 per cent of overweight doctors discussed the problem of losing weight compared to 30 per cent doctors having normal weight. Top-notch Indian doctors agree to the findings of this study.

According to Dr. Kameshwar Prasad, senior neurologist at AIIMS, a physician who is fit has a level of confidence in advising his patients about losing weight by healthy food habits and daily exercise. The doctors, who do not practice what they preach, lack conviction in giving such advice and are most likely to fail in motivating their patients.

The researchers of John Hopkins University said that similar research on doctors who smoked revealed that they are unable to successfully advice their patients about quitting, as it sounds hypocritical.
