Unawareness and Ignorance of AVN! What causes Hip Replacement Surgeries in adolescence?
What is avascular necrosis or AVN (osteonecrosis)? Avascular necrosis (AVN) can be described as the death of one’s blood tissue owing to the lack of blood supply. AVN or osteonecrosis is a commonly occurring condition in adolescence that is often neglected. One may suffer from the vascular necrosis of the hip due to the weakening of the bone and its collapse along with the deformity of the femoral head. One may encounter conditions like arthritis if he/she fails to treat it at the right time. Here, the femoral head tends to lose part or the whole blood supply, and the part of the entire bone of the femoral head dies. A lack of awareness and proper diagnosis of avascular necrosis (AVN) in adolescence is the leading cause of femur bone loss, causing hip joint pain in youngsters. Thus, preserving the function of the hip joints via minimally invasive hip replacement helps the patients to be back on their feet without pain. Dr Ashwani Maichand, Orthopedic surgeon, Apollo spectra Delhi says “After going through the history of the patients and other tests, a suitable treatment is planned for them. Minimally invasive total hip replacement surgery relieves pain associated with hip AVN and helps the patient to be back on feet without pain to live a normal life.”
Osteonecrosis and weakening of the bone
Avascular necrosis of the hip arises when owing to the weakening of the bone and deformity of the femoral head. Moreover, a loss of blood supply to the femoral head causes the deformation of the joints. During the adolescence stage, many people avoid getting themselves evaluated for this condition as they have misconceptions regarding the disease. Hence, the discomfort and pain continue to increase, and one may encounter bone degradation, and the patient starts limping.
Symptoms of avascular necrosis or AVN
The symptoms of this condition can be the knee, thigh, and even excruciating hip pain. This unbearable pain can last from over weeks to months. During adolescence, many people avoid getting themselves evaluated for this condition, and the discomfort and pain continue to increase, and one may start limping. AVN is commonly seen in men in comparison with women, and both hip joints tend to get affected owing to this condition.
Hip joint pain due to osteonecrosis
Dr Ashwani Maichand, said “Majority of the patients from rural areas below 35 tend to have hip joint pain due to AVN. At a young age, rejection of marriage due to limping leads to depression in these patients as their one leg appears shorter than others. Many feel embarrassed and avoid socializing, owing to poor self-esteem. Some become obese due to lack of movement and even encounter back pain. AVN is more common in men when compared to women, and both hip joints tend to get affected.”
Treatment of avascular necrosis or AVN
After an examination, the doctor will diagnose this condition and suggest an appropriate treatment. You will be prescribed medication or even physical therapy to get rid of that nagging pain. Though, a hip replacement surgery may be the last resort and should be done on the advice of the doctor. Thus, preserving the function of the hip joints with the help of a minimally invasive hip replacement helps the patients to stand back on their feet without pain.
Takeaway Tip: AVN is a disease of young people. It should be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible so that these patients don't spend the prime of their life limping and taking pain killers.
