The study on four-strain (quadrivalent) flu vaccine demonstrated the efficacy against influenza in children. It was found that the vaccine protects children against four strains of flu and is more effective than the usual three-strain vaccine.
Researchers have formulated a vaccine that protects children against four strains of flu and is more effective than the usual three-strain vaccine.
The four-strain (quadrivalent) vaccine is available as a nasal spray or an injection for the first time this flu season. The study of about 200 children at the American University of Beirut Medical Center looked at how kids responded either to the four-strain vaccine or a hepatitis A vaccine, and then compared its response rates with the response rate of three-strain vaccine from last year's flu season.
The study was first to demonstrate the efficacy of a quadrivalent flu vaccine against influenza in children. It was found that by preventing moderate to severe influenza, vaccination achieved reductions in doctors' visits, parental absences from work and absences from school.
The report was published online in the New England Journal of Medicine.
